Chip storage, AI stocks fell in Hong Kong market after artificial intelligence leaders called for slowing AI model development.

DeepZero down over 15%; 2x Leveraged SK Hynix ETF down 9%; Z.AI, 2x Leveraged Samsung ETF down over 6%; Haizhi Tech down 5%; Biren Tech down nearly 4%.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in a blog post Saturday that it was time to "slow the pace" of improving advanced AI models.

"Over the last few months, I have become convinced that fully addressing the risks requires even more prudence — not just investing in risk prevention, but pacing the rate of capabilities advancement so that risk prevention has time to keep up."

He said his AI startup would adopt steps such as independent evaluators and urged the industry to slow down.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, writing on the social site X, pledged to use third-party evaluators. SpaceX (SPCX) and Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, in his own X post said, "Dario is right." Anthropic has the Claude AI model, OpenAI has Chat-GPT and SpaceX's xAI has Grok.

Amodei's comments came a few days after Anthropic researcher resigned, citing existential AI threats. Amodei himself cited a July incident in which OpenAI's models hacked AI and robotics startup Hugging Face. (Nvidia (NVDA) on Sept. 3 agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.93 billion.)

All three leaders have voiced concerns about AI risks previously, but none have slowed their work. If Anthropic pauses, OpenAI could race ahead. If Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceX's xAI and others such as Google-parent Alphabet (GOOGL) did coordinate a slowdown, Chinese AI firms could take a great leap forward.
