Shares of BAIC Motor (01958) jumped more than 9% in early trading today, before settling with a 6.43% gain at HK$0.745, with turnover reaching HK$4.72 million. The rally comes as expectations for consolidation within China's automotive industry intensify, following a series of supportive policy signals from regulators.

Nine government departments, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, have issued the "15th Five-Year Plan" for the development of the intelligent connected new energy vehicle industry, marking the first time that "capacity warning and adjustment" has been written into the sector's five-year blueprint. Additionally, Shao Ji, Deputy Director of the Industrial Development Department at the National Development and Reform Commission, explicitly stated that the government will fully support large enterprise groups in the industry to deepen their reforms. Going forward, the authorities will rely on market-based and law-based approaches to promote mergers and acquisitions among automotive companies, helping leading enterprises integrate core resources in research and development, and production, while curbing homogeneous low-price competition in product design and technological innovation.

In the first half of this year, BAIC Motor reported revenue of RMB 57.726 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 29.94%. The company posted a net loss attributable to parent shareholders of RMB 1.594 billion, swinging to a loss from a profit in the same period last year. The company attributed the loss to intense competition in the domestic automotive market during the first half of 2026, which led to sales volumes falling short of expectations, compounded by rising raw material costs and increased market investment, all of which collectively resulted in a net loss attributable to equity holders.
