South Korean Shares End Week Higher on Strong July Exports, Easing Concerns Over US Fed Rate Hikes

South Korean shares rose again on Friday to close the week in green, driven by strong July exports and easing U.S. rate concerns after U.S. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller signaled caution on further tightening.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index, or Kospi, increased by 107.73 points, or 1.6%, to close at 6,687.21. The Kosdaq also rose by 23.29 points, or nearly 3%, to close at 813.5.

In economic news, South Korea booked a current account surplus of $42.1 billion in July, down from $49.7 billion in June, according to data from the Bank of Korea published Friday. The figure missed Trading Economics' $50 billion surplus forecast.

The goods surplus narrowed to $40.4 billion as exports and imports fell month on month, while the services deficit widened to $1.97 billion.

In corporate news, A security breach at CJ ENM (KOSDAQ:035760) subsidiary TVing resulted in the leakage of source code from 361 development projects and information from 39.54 million accounts, which comprised 22.06 million active and 17.37 million inactive accounts.
