Microsoft is the 'Adult in Charge' on Fears over AI Security. Stock Gets Upgraded to Buy.

Heightened fears over artificial-intelligence safety risks and potential chaos from frontier models have been driving enterprises toward Microsoft as the trusted "adults in charge," according to a Wall Street firm.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to halt AI development rattled the tech sector, but Microsoft could stand to gain. Melius Research analyst Ben Reitzes noted Monday that Microsoft and cybersecurity companies could see a boost as CEO Satya Nadella and his team become increasingly considered as the "adults in charge."

"That freak out means (at least to us) that Microsoft and cyber companies are even more needed," Reitzes wrote in a note Monday. The firm upgraded Microsoft shares to Buy from Hold with a $665 price target.

Reitzes added that businesses prefer Microsoft's secure wrappers, governance, and routing capabilities instead of relying directly on AI labs. Growing AI demand could give Microsoft the leg up to charge premium rates for its tools while expanding capacity to handle more cloud customers, driving growth from both higher prices and increased volume, he wrote.

Shares of Microsoft rose 0.5% to $520 in premarket trading Monday. The stock was on pace to close at its highest level since Oct. 30, 2025, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Shares have risen 7.6% this year.

Microsoft has doubled down on AI across its virtual assistant, Copilot, and its Azure cloud platform. Wall Street anticipates heavier AI spending in fiscal 2027, which began July 1. Analysts also have continued to emphasize Microsoft's capacity to boost revenue through Azure and Copilot, which could present significant upside for the stock.

Reitzes is far from alone in his optimistic outlook. Of the 59 analysts polled by FactSet, 98% rate the stock an equivalent to Buy.

More recently, Piper Sandler analyst Billy Fitzsimmons said that Microsoft's integration with OpenAI's virtual assistant Dots could attract more customers to its Microsoft 365 E7 tier, which costs $99 per user a month. The platform is Microsoft's control plane for AI agents, designed for information technology and security administrators. The firm has an Overweight rating on the stock.
